International superstar Shakira has some exciting news for her fans. The Colombian artist recently took to her social media to unveil her upcoming song, “El Jefe,” a collaboration with Fuerza Regida.

The highly-anticipated track is scheduled to make its debut on Wednesday, September 20. In a recent interview with ET, Shakira remained tight-lipped about the details of the song but left fans intrigued with her teasing remark, “I may not be in charge in this song, but stay tuned.”

Additionally, the artist shared a sneak peek of “El Jefe,” marking Shakira’s first foray into Mexican music. The song’s lyrics revolve around an individual who possesses the mindset of a millionaire despite lacking the financial means to match it. Shakira sings passionately over a lively beat, expressing, “You dream of escaping the neighborhood, possessing all the qualities of a millionaire, refined tastes, the mentality; you’re only missing a paycheck.”

Shakira’s collaboration with Fuerza Regida is emblematic of the profound impact Mexican music has on the Latin music landscape today. With groups like Fuerza Regida leading the way, the genre has experienced unprecedented growth in popularity, not only in the United States but also globally. According to Luminate, regional Mexican music consumption in the U.S. has surged by 42.1% year-to-date through May 25, surpassing gains in the broader Latin music genre, as well as other genres like country, dance/electronic, rock, and pop, as reported by Billboard in May.

This exciting announcement comes hot on the heels of Shakira’s sensational performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12. During the event, she wowed the audience with a medley of her greatest hits, including “She Wolf,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Objection,” as well as more recent tracks such as “Te Felicito” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

In a groundbreaking moment, Shakira made history at the VMAs by becoming the first South American artist to receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award. She follows in the footsteps of Jennifer Lopez, who became the inaugural Latin artist to receive the award in 2018.
